Football Report 9/23/21
After a slight delay S&HR is back with football coverage.
We entered two contests at Betonline - the $500,000 MEGA CONTEST and the $200,000 NFL Survivor Contest.
Week 1 saw us go 3-2 in the MEGA CONTEST and survive by selecting the LA Rams.
Week 2 was 5-0 in the MEGA CONTEST and we survived by selecting Green Bay.
The top pick for last week, Vegas +5 (or +6 if you identified the key situation which prompted the pick and jumped on it early) went into Pittsburgh and won by 9.
What's the key situation?
Go AGAINST any team that won the previous week as a road underdog and is returning home as a favorite.
That will really be put to the test this week so exercise caution. Tennessee went to Seattle and won in overtime as a 6.5 point underdog, now they come home to face the division rival Colts as a -5 favorite. The teams traded road wins last year, but with Wentz questionable who knows how this will turn out?
The Raiders come home after beating the Steelers and are favored vs. Miami by 4. An odd line here as at Betonline it opened at 4, jumped to 5.5, then dropped right back down to 4. Jacoby "The Joke" Brissett will go for the Dolphins. Sad to see two great situations like this marred by backups starting.
MEGA CONTEST SELECTIONS:
LA Chargers +6.5
Indianapolis +5
Denver -10.5
Miami +4
Green Bay +3.5
SURVIVOR PICK: DENVER
On the college side of things we love STANFORD +4.5 vs UCLA. Stanford came through huge for us as a straight up +640 underdog vs USC and we expect a similar performance here. UCLA and USC have to be the softest, most over-hyped teams year after year.
RANDOM THOUGHTS:
- Is Frank Reich regretting the trade for Carson Wentz already? We predicted great things for Wentz but it's becoming clear he will never be anything more than a constant cripple. Remember, this is the Glass Carson that Howie Long compared to John Elway prior to his missing the end of the 2017 season and watching Nick Foles win Super Bowl MVP. Coach Reich is apparently the religious sort so he had better start praying Wentz can actually stay healthy for a few games.
- Tampa visiting New England Oct. 3 for Sunday Night Football got us thinking - shouldn't the NFL waive the 5 year wait for the Hall of Fame when it comes to Brady? Other leagues have done this in certain situations, usually when the player in question has some sort of illness. Why not waive it this one time for sheer greatness and put an active player in the HOF?
- HERO OF THE WEEK: Jake Haener, Fresno St QB. What Haener did @ UCLA was nothing short of heroic. Did he push himself into the first round of the NFL draft with this performance?
- WIMPS OF THE WEEK: Carson Wentz (for reasons stated previously) and Vikings K Greg Joseph. Joseph only had to kick the ball correctly from 37 yards away to give the Vikings a big win in Arizona but as usual the Vikings were outclassed.
